One-of-a-Kind Videos to Help Medical Residencies
Recruit the Perfect Candidates

why blend in when you can stand out?

Many medical residency videos look amazing. They’re well lit. The people interviewed are all dressed up and delivering the talking points about “quality.” They even have some really cool drone shots of impressive buildings. But … they often lack the one thing that will help them attract the right candidates — any true sense of the personality of the people or program. Or, more simply, the vibe — which is what candidates really want to know. Because the biggest question on every candidate’s mind is, “Will I fit in there?”

ABOUT

Insanely curious? Or just insane? Hmmm ...

As you can tell, I’m not afraid to use humor to capture someone’s attention. You’re reading this, right? It’s one of the tricks I learned while working as a marketing copywriter for 20 plus years. I started applying these skills toward video production in the early 2010’s when the camera industry went through a bit of a revolution. Since then, I’ve been combining my years of experience interviewing and writing, with my technical understanding of cameras, lighting, sound, and editing to create professional, personal videos. And now I’m using those powers for good (mostly) by helping medical residency programs attract the ideal candidates.

WHAT TO EXPECT

THE PROCESS

So, how does this work? And what’s your time commitment? Like Bobby Brown, let me break it down …

1. Pre-Production

This is the meeting stage where I learn everything I can about the program, especially from the residents, since they are the target audience. These can be done over the phone, through Zoom or in person.

Using what I learn, I'll develop a theme and direction for the video and then present it to the group for feedback/approval.

2. Script Development

Once the direction is finalized, I'll then write a script that incorporates all the great things that residents told me about the program. We'll then meet again to review the script, make changes, and ultimately, finalize it.

3. Casting and Location Scouting

This is where your time commitment amps up. You'll first need to choose which residents and faculty you want "starring" in the production. The more enthusiastic the person, the better.

Then you'll need to assign a point person to work with me to choose film locations for each scene AND to coordinate schedules of all those involved. The ideal person for this role will be very organized.

4. Filming and Editing

The fun truly begins when we start filming. Shooting times vary depending on the complexity and location of each scene. "Actors" need to know their lines and be ready to have fun. It's that simple.

5. Enjoy, celebrate and share!

Host a viewing party and hand out awards. Have fun with it! Then share the link through your social media accounts, on your website, and with every potential candidate. They'll get a much better idea of what your program is like. And you'll get more candidates who are better suited for your program applying.

BEST. MATCH. EVER.

What happens when you get all of the residents to participate in the production of the video from the start? The highest rank list in the history of the program. And a lot of bonding (and laughing) among the residents.

THE SHOCKING VIDEO THAT STARTED IT ALL

We had an idea -- to create a promotional video unlike any other in the country to help a medical residency program stand out. It worked! During interviews, it was the first thing most candidates talked about. They just had to know more!

“Thanks to Mike’s video, we’ve had the best match year in my time with the program! I can't tell you how many times candidates brought it up during interviews. It generated so much interest in our program. We are thrilled with the finished product and our residents had a blast creating and filming it!"
